Creamy French onion dip made in 10 minutes with caramelized onion spread, Greek yogurt, sour cream, and fresh chives. No caramelizing, no soup packet, and a little lighter than the classic. Serve it with chips, pretzels, or veggies!
Transfer the French Onion Dip to a serving bowl and serve with your favorite chips or pretzel thins. Enjoy!
Notes
No caramelized onion spread? You can easily make your own! Cook 1 cup finely diced yellow onion in a skillet with a small amount of olive oil and butter over medium-low heat for 20 to 25 minutes. Stir occasionally and keep the heat low to prevent the onions from burning. They should become deeply golden, soft, and jammy. Let the onions cool slightly before adding them to the dip.
For extra flavor: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of balsamic vinegar to the dip. It adds a subtle tang and sweetness that complements the caramelized onions and gives the dip a little more depth without making it taste strongly of balsamic.
Let it chill: For the best flavor, refrigerate the dip for at least 30 minutes before serving. This gives the ingredients time to blend together and allows the onion and garlic flavors to develop. If you're short on time, you can serve it right away.
Make-ahead tip: This dip is perfect for making ahead! Prepare it up to 2 days in advance, cover, and refrigerate. Give it a good stir before serving. The flavor may actually be even better after the dip has had time to chill.
Storage: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days and stir before serving. This dip doesn't freeze well.
