10-Minute French Onion Dip (No Caramelizing Required!)
I love a good (and quick!) dip, and this French onion dip recipe comes together in 10 minutes flat! Using a mix of sour cream, Greek yogurt, a jar of caramelized onion spread, fresh chives, and garlic powder, no stove is needed! Every party I go to, the French onion dip is always the first bowl on the table to go… and the last one anybody actually makes from scratch! It’s so, so easy to make homemade, and I’ve eliminated the need to sauté onions for an hour. I love to serve mine with ruffled chips, pretzel thins, or veggies. You won’t need storage tips for this one, trust me!

Why This French Onion Dip Beats the Packet

So many French onion dip recipes make you caramelize onions for 45 minutes and then chill the dip for two hours before you’re allowed to eat it (oof!). Not today! My version gets creative and uses caramelized onion spread, aka onions somebody already stood over the stove for, and you get that jammy, sweet onion flavor the second you stir it in. It’s the same shortcut I use in my creamy French onion pasta, and it’s the reason this dip takes 10 minutes instead of an hour!
The other thing you’ll notice is that instead of all sour cream (or a block of cream cheese), it’s mostly Greek yogurt with just enough sour cream for richness, so it’s a little lighter and higher in protein than the classic version. I do the same thing in my Greek yogurt buffalo chicken dip, and it really does taste like the real thing. A little lighter, still a party dip, and totally loved by all- yum!
JordanIngredient Notes
Here are the key ingredients you’ll need for this dip, with some notes on how I chose each one. For the rest of the ingredients, measurements, and instructions, scroll to the recipe card down below.

- Caramelized onion spread: This really makes the whole recipe. Look for a jarred caramelized onion spread, jam, or “onion confit” near the cheese counter or the condiments. It should be sweet, deeply browned, and jammy, not a chunky relish.
- Greek yogurt: Plain, and I’d go full-fat or 2% for the creamiest dip. It brings the tang and most of the body, plus a nice bump of protein over an all-sour-cream dip.
- Sour cream: Don’t skip it! Greek yogurt alone can taste a little sharp, so the sour cream rounds it out and gives it that amazing creamy texture. I personally think full-fat is best, but go with what you prefer.
- Fresh chives: Fresh really makes a difference here! Thinly sliced green onion (the green parts) works in a pinch if you don’t have chives.
- Balsamic vinegar (optional): My favorite little add-in. A teaspoon or two adds flavor without making the dip taste like balsamic.
Recipe Variations
- From-scratch caramelized onions: Cook 1 cup finely diced yellow onion in a little olive oil and butter over medium-low heat for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and jammy. Let them cool before stirring them in (warm onions will make the dip’s texture a little thin).
- All sour cream: Swap the Greek yogurt for sour cream for a richer, more traditional-tasting dip. It’ll be a little looser, so give it a chill before serving.
- Extra savory: A teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of onion powder takes the flavor closer to a French onion soup vibe.
- Herby: Stir in a little fresh thyme with the chives. Thyme and caramelized onions are the same combo that makes my one skillet French onion chicken so good.
- Crunchy top: Right before serving, sprinkle crispy fried onions over the top for a little texture.
How to Make French Onion Dip

- Step 1: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, Greek yogurt, caramelized onion spread, chives, garlic powder, and kosher salt. Stir until the spread is evenly swirled through and the dip is smooth and lightly speckled with onion.

- Step 2: Taste it. If using, this is where I stir in 1 to 2 teaspoons of balsamic vinegar. Start with one, you can always add more.

- Step 3: For the best flavor, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes so the onion and garlic have time to work their way through the dip. Short on time? You can serve it right away and it’s still delicious.

- Step 4: Transfer to a serving bowl, top with a few extra chives, and serve with your favorite chips or pretzel thins. That’s the whole recipe!
Recipe Tips
- Jarred onion spreads can separate a little, so make sure to give it a good stir first.
- Some onion spreads are saltier than others, so mix everything else first and then season. You can always add more, but you can’t take it out.
- Chilling for thirty minutes in the fridge takes this from good to SO good. The flavors mellow and blend, and the dip firms up perfectly!
- If making your own onions, cook them low and slow! Twenty to 25 minutes over medium-low is the sweet spot for golden, jammy onions.
- Chop the chives small, so you get them in every bite. Save some for the top so the dip looks as good as it tastes.

What to Serve with French Onion Dip
Ruffled or kettle-cooked potato chips are sturdy enough to scoop without breaking. I also love pretzel thins, pita chips, and crackers, which hold up just as well. A pile of celery, carrots, cucumber, and bell pepper strips are also great options.
It’s also SO much more than a chip dip. Spoon it over crispy air fryer potato wedges instead of ketchup. Dollop it onto air fryer smashed potatoes and it eats like a loaded baked potato. It’s even good spread on a burger bun. For a full game day spread, set it next to a warm, creamy Mexican street corn dip so you’ve got one cold dip and one hot one on the table. Trust me on that one!
Storage & Make-Ahead Tips
- This dip is perfect for making ahead. Prepare it up to 2 days in advance, cover, and refrigerate, then give it a good stir before serving. If, and I mean IF, you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days and stir before digging in.
- Freezing: Nope, I wouldn’t. The texture will be so weird once thawed.

Recipe FAQs
The classic version is sour cream and a packet of onion soup mix. This homemade French onion dip recipe uses sour cream, Greek yogurt, caramelized onion spread, fresh chives, garlic powder, kosher salt, and an optional splash of balsamic vinegar. No packet, and it takes 10 minutes!
Real caramelized onion flavor. Soup mix gives you salt and dried onion, but jammy, slow-cooked onions (from a jar or your own skillet) give you the sweetness and depth that keep you going back for another scoop. After that, it’s balance: enough tang from the yogurt and sour cream to cut the richness, and 30 minutes in the fridge so the flavors blend.
Absolutely. All sour cream gives you a richer, more traditional dip. All Greek yogurt will be thicker and tangier, so you might want an extra pinch of salt to balance it.
This recipe is naturally gluten-free as long as your caramelized onion spread is, so check the label. Serve it with gluten-free pretzels or veggies, and you’re set.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 3/4 cup greek yogurt
- 3 tablespoons caramelized onion spread
- 2 tablespoons diced chives
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1-2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar optional
Instructions
- In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, greek yogurt, caramelized onion spread, chives, garlic powder, and kosher salt.1/2 cup sour cream, 3/4 cup greek yogurt, 3 tablespoons caramelized onion spread, 2 tablespoons diced chives, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, 1-2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
- Transfer the French Onion Dip to a serving bowl and serve with your favorite chips or pretzel thins. Enjoy!
Notes
- No caramelized onion spread? You can easily make your own! Cook 1 cup finely diced yellow onion in a skillet with a small amount of olive oil and butter over medium-low heat for 20 to 25 minutes. Stir occasionally and keep the heat low to prevent the onions from burning. They should become deeply golden, soft, and jammy. Let the onions cool slightly before adding them to the dip.
- For extra flavor: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of balsamic vinegar to the dip. It adds a subtle tang and sweetness that complements the caramelized onions and gives the dip a little more depth without making it taste strongly of balsamic.
- Let it chill: For the best flavor, refrigerate the dip for at least 30 minutes before serving. This gives the ingredients time to blend together and allows the onion and garlic flavors to develop. If you’re short on time, you can serve it right away.
- Make-ahead tip: This dip is perfect for making ahead! Prepare it up to 2 days in advance, cover, and refrigerate. Give it a good stir before serving. The flavor may actually be even better after the dip has had time to chill.
- Storage: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days and stir before serving. This dip doesn’t freeze well.
