With the comforting Italian flavors of marinara sauce and melty cheese, these Chicken Parmesan Burgers are the perfect handheld (and healthier) twist on the classic American burger!
Preheat the oven to 400 F. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat on in the microwave for 20 seconds or until it’s completely melted.
1/2 stick softened butter
In a small bowl, mix melted butter and minced garlic. Lay each burger bun flat on a foiled baking sheet, inside facing up. Using a silicone brush, coat the inside of each burger bun with the butter mixture. Bake for 3-5 minutes or until the buns are toasted to your liking.
1 tbsp minced garlic, 4 burger buns
In a large mixing bowl, combine chicken, basil, parmesan cheese, Italian bread crumbs, red pepper flakes, thyme, oregano, garlic powder, and salt. Form chicken mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, about ¼ inch thick.
1 lb ground chicken, 1/4 cup Italian bread crumbs, 4 fresh basil leaves, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, 1 tsp red pepper flakes, 1 tsp dried thyme, 1 tsp dried oregano, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste
In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium-high heat. Cook the chicken patties for 4-5 minutes on each side. Flip patties when the bottom has turned golden brown, then add the marinara sauce to the pan.
2 cups marinara sauce, 1 tbsp olive oil
Top each chicken patty with mozzarella cheese and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer chicken patties covered with a tight fitting lid for 4-5 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the patties are fully cooked.
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
To serve: Spread marinara sauce from the pan on the bottom half of each bun, then layer with 2 fresh basil leaves and chicken.
Notes
Always use fresh basil for this recipe instead of dried!
If you want to make this recipe healthier, swap the bun for a lettuce wrap.
Freshly shredded cheese will always produce the best melt!
