Why This Recipe Works

- Better for you: These crispy apple chips are a great alternative to traditional potato chips and are sure to satisfy your craving for something crunchy and sweet.
- Quick and convenient: They’re easy to make and you probably have most of the ingredients already on hand!
- Great to customize: Make them your own by adding different ingredients to them once they’re air fried like chocolate, peanut butter or powdered sugar.
Ingredients You’ll Need

- Red apples – for this easy air fryer recipe, my favorite apples are Gala apples because they are one of the more sweet apples.
- Maple syrup – you can use any kind of maple syrup that you prefer.
- Cinnamon – ground cinnamon pairs perfectly with the maple syrup and brings a warm and comforting taste to the crunchy apple chips.

Substitutions/Additions
- If you’re looking for more of a tart flavor, you can pick up some Granny Smith apples.
- You can use regular or sugar-free syrup; they both work well, but I don’t recommend using honey because it’s harder to work with.
Best apples for apple chips
I’ve tried out both Gala and Granny Smith apples for this delicious apple chips recipe because I wanted to see which types of apples that I liked more.
Honestly, they are both delightful, but it depends on what kind of wholesome snack that you’re looking for.
If you want something a little sweeter, go with Gala apples. If you’re looking for something a little more acidic and sour, try Granny Smith apples.
When deciding on the type of apples you want to use, keep in mind there will be added sugar from the maple syrup. So you don’t want to go with anything super sweet.
However, the difference is not very noticeable since the apple slice is very thin.
How to Make Air Fryer Apple Chips

- Slice apples: Cut apples into ⅛” inch-thick slices using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife. I highly recommend using a mandoline to get even slices.

- Season apples: Line sliced apples on a baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, add a thin maple syrup layer. Then, sprinkle cinnamon over each apple. Flip and repeat the process.

- Air fry: Place apple slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Work in batches to avoid stacking the slices. Cook for 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.

- Cool: Remove apple chips from the air fryer with tongs and place them on a cooling rack for at least 5 minutes.
Recipe FAQs
Whether you want to leave the core of your apples in or take it out is totally up to you! I like to leave mine in because I really like the star shape in the center. If you want to core them first, I really like this apple corer because it helps stablize the apple so it doesn’t fall over while removing the core.
I found the easiest and quickest way to slice your apples is by using a mandoline slicer. This helps with making thin and even slices without having to use a knife. If you cut some too thick, they may be a little more chewy and soft instead of being crispy like a chip.
I recommend eating your homemade apple chips fresh out of the air fryer. This is when they will be the most crisp! However, they’re still delicious a day or two after your air fry them. I would just put them in an airtight container until you’re ready to eat them.

Notes
- These air fryer cinnamon apple chips make a great nutritious snack or even to add into your meal prep for the week.
- You can also pack them for a delicious on the go snack or put them in a baggie with a sweet and encouraging note and send them to school with your little ones.
- Safety tip: when using a mandolin for slicing apples, use cut resistant glove so that you don’t accidentally cut your hand.
- Add cinnamon sugar, drizzle some chocolate over them or even dip them in peanut butter for some protein.
-
- Smaller apple slices cook faster; check on them every 5 minutes.
- Thicker apple slices take longer to cook than the time suggested in the recipe. If you sliced them by hand rather than using a mandoline, they may take longer.
- Cook the apple chips until they are browned, especially on the edges. You might want to flip the apple chips every 3-4 minutes, depending on your air fryer.
- Avoid using honey as a substitute for maple syrup because it’s thick and difficult to spread on the apple slices.
