Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce Ingredients

You only need six pantry staples to make this spot-on Chick-fil-A sauce recipe at home.

Small bowls filled with honey mustard, BBQ sauce and seasonings.
  • Honey mustard: The base of the sauce, adding sweetness and tang that gives it that signature flavor. Add a teaspoon of yellow mustard or Dijon mustard for a sharper bite.
  • BBQ sauce: Brings a smoky depth and a touch of richness to balance the sweetness. A classic, slightly sweet BBQ sauce works best; avoid anything too spicy unless you want extra heat.
  • Ranch dressing: Makes the sauce smooth and creamy while mellowing out the bold flavors. Use full-fat ranch for the closest match to the original flavor and texture.
  • Garlic powder: Adds subtle savory flavor without overpowering the sauce.
  • Onion powder: Rounds everything out with a mild, savory finish.
  • Optional: Add a squeeze of lemon juice for extra tanginess. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, or a drizzle of hot sauce for a little heat.

Recipe FAQs

Does Chick-fil-A sell their sauce in stores?

Yes, you can now find Chick-fil-A sauce at most grocery stores near the ketchup, mustard and other bottled sauces. However, I prefer to make it at home so I can control the ingredients and keep things simple. This version uses basic pantry staples and skips additives like soybean oil and corn syrup that are found in the bottled sauce. I love that it tastes just as good (if not better) while being fresher and more customizable.

What is Chick-fil-A sauce made of?

Chick-fil-A sauce is a blend of honey mustard, barbecue sauce, and ranch dressing, along with a few seasonings. The combination creates its signature balanced flavor that pairs perfectly with chicken.

Can I make it ahead of time?

Yes! In fact, I recommend making it about a day in advance to help the flavors to marry and blend so it tastes more cohesive.

How long does Chick-fil-A sauce last?

You can store your homemade sauce in the fridge for up to one week. I keep mine in mason jars or weck jars because they have tight fitting lids.

  2. Hi Jordan – how much is “some” liquid smoke? Hubby brought home a bottle a while back but I haven’t used it yet for fear that I’ll use too much and ruin whatever I add it to.
    Thanks,
    Sheila

  3. why dose it only last a week when all of the ingredients are in containers that last for at least 3 months like the honey mustard and the bbq and ranch you should be able to make a big batch that can last just as long in its own container unless everything was home made they wouldn’t have a way to keep them fresh because of different additives that store bought has

    1. Great question! This is because once combined, the sauce may be more susceptible to spoilage due to factors like moisture content, pH level, and the growth of microorganisms.

  4. Cindy Ann Jenkins says:

Is the ranch dressing powder or liquid? Also which brand of honey mustard?

    1. the ranch dressing is the liquid kind. For the honey mustard, you can use whatever you like but I really like Ken’s honey mustard for this one because it’s sweet!
