When I first got my air fryer, I was SO excited, as I am for any new kitchen gadget. And like any new kitchen appliance, you need to learn how to use it. I put that off for about a year…oops!

Now I love my air fryer and I want to make everything in it. Stay tuned for lots of air fryer recipes coming your way! You can check out my other air fryer recipes in the meantime.

How to make french fries

Deep fried french fries are the most common in restaurants. This is how they are typically made when you ask for a french fries with your burger. As much as I love a deep fried french fry for its ultimate crispiness, sometimes I enjoy the healthier alternative.

As a kid I thought McDonald’s had the best french fries, but the calories in those fries are way too high for me now! Did you have a favorite place to get french fries as a kid?

As a healthier alternative, you can also bake french fries in the oven or cook them in the air fryer like I did in this recipe.

How to make french fries in the air fryer

Air fryer french fries are similar to oven baked french fries. Both ways are healthier alternatives to the traditional deep frying method.

potato fries in an air fryer basket

This recipe only uses 4 ingredients:

  • Russet potatoes
  • Garlic salt
  • Onion powder
  • Cooking spray

All you have to do is peel (or don’t if you’re feeling lazy) and slice the potatoes. Then soak them in a large bowl of cold water for an hour to remove the starch this helps them get nice and crispy while they’re cooking!

Next, drain the water from the bowl and toss the potatoes with garlic salt or garlic powder and onion powder and place them in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Spray them with a little bit of olive oil and cook the fries at 400 F for 10 minutes on each side.

In about 20 minutes, you’ll have the most crispy french fries ever!

If you don’t want to hand cut the potatoes, you can use a french fry cutter or a mandolin for accurately sliced potato fries.

Homemade french fries

Before my air fryer, I used to make homemade baked french fries in the oven. Now I can free up my oven space and save time by making french fries in the air fryer! Regardless of how you make them, homemade french fries are the best.

National French Fry day is July 13th, conveniently the day after my birthday! So I will definitely be making this air fryer french fry recipe to celebrate National French Fry Day and my birthday!!

Are french fries gluten free?

French fries served in a restaurant usually aren’t gluten free because they are fried in a fryer that’s also used to cook wheat-coated items like battered chicken nuggets.

A basic french fry recipe is pretty much just potatoes, cooking oil, salt and pepper. Most cooking oils are gluten free, as are the other ingredients. Therefore, french fries are gluten free as long as they aren’t cross contaminated with wheat ingredients.

This Air Fryer French Fries recipe is gluten free as long as the air fryer basket is clean from any wheat ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 russet potato
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • cooking oil spray

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 380 F.
  • Peel and slice the potato into 1/4 inch slices, then cut each slice into 1/4 inch french fries. A mandolin or a french fry cutter is helpful for this.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, soak the potatoes in water for one hour. This removes a lot of the starch from the potatoes, making them even crispier! Next, drain the water from the bowl and toss the potatoes with garlic salt and onion powder.
  • Place the fries in the air fryer basket in an even layer without overlapping or crowding the basket. Spray them with a little bit of olive oil. Then cook the potatoes for 20 minutes, turning halfway through.
