Easy Empanada Sauce Recipe

Empanadas make a great appetizer, snack, game-day meal, or quick lunch/dinner. However, an empanada (although delicious on it’s own), needs a side kick.

This empanada sauce is great because not only is it full of incredible flavors that pair perfectly with your empanadas, it stores easily and can be used with any meal, including snacks.

Pairing your tasty empanadas with this sauce will give them a bit of lightness, depth, and honestly, it’s just down right addictive! I love dipping homemade Chicken Empanadas in this sauce so much.

Tip!

You can also use this empanada sauce as a dip for your favorite tortilla chips and finger foods.

Empanada Sauce Ingredients

Base ingredients: to make the base of your sauce, you are going to want to use greek yogurt and avocado. Make sure the avocados you have on hand are ready and not too hard.

Spices and herbs: we are going to need: garlic, cilantro, green onions, and salt.

Wet ingredients: every great sauce has a balance between wet and dry ingredients. To get this dip just right we are going to use some olive oil, lime juice, and water.

How to make Empanada Dipping Sauce

empanada sauce ingredients in a blender

1. Blend all ingredients. Add all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse on high until combined.

2. Add water. For a thinner sauce, you can add a bit more water. I would recommend adding an additional teaspoon at a time until you get the texture desired.

3. Store. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

What are empanadas served with?

Although empanadas are a great on their own, they can also be served as a meal! Below are some of my favorite things to pair empanadas with:

I love to serve them with some ice cold Mint Mojitos too!

Can you bake empanadas instead of frying them?

Of course! You can also make them in the air fryer if you’re looking for more of a crunch without all the fat and calories of deep frying or pan frying them in oil.

Baking or air frying your empanadas are healthier alternatives (and just as delicious) that will still maintain the empanadas flaky texture.

If you opt for baking, you can also bake a larger quantity at once, perfect for parties or gatherings.

What oil do you fry empanadas in?

This is really just a matter of preference, however, I recommend vegetable oil if frying. Alternatively, you can use canola, corn oil, or olive oil.

I made this sauce to go along with homemade empanadas my cousin made and this sauce took them to a whole different level!!! I will be using this sauce on meats, and on salads! It tasted so fresh and had a pretty green color! Thank you for this recipe, a winner hands down!!

AMAZING !!!! I would put this sauce on MANY different things. It was delicious!! I did not have Greek yogurt in the house, so I subbed in Light sour cream and it seemed to work fine. Next time, I will thin out with a little more water and drizzle over fish or shrimp tacos.

  7. What can you substitute the avocado with. Iโ€™m allergic to avocados.

    1. Usually bananas are a good substitute but I’m afraid the flavor would be too much here. Plain hummus could be a good sub, I would mix everything together before adding the hummus and see how you like the texture. If you want it thicker, then add the hummus.Start with 1/4 cup.
